I guess I am just very ignorant because I listen to this song on repeat for hours and i still can't understand it really.
I think I am really driven to find the meaning because I link this song to a guy I really like a lot and he was the first one to play it for me, so I like to think it means something that could fit for our situation but who knows.

I agree it is an amazing song. I think the song is pretty simple. an artist who feels torn about his passion for music and ambition while his love is much more rooted in a small town. strawman is often referred to someone who doesn't have a brain. so he is being honest about maybe being non-too-bright about his relationship. i also get that they feel in love in their youth in a much more innocent time before he got all swept up in the mirage of fame- which leaves many empty in its pursuit. who knows -
