I agree with ScottyT..this is a brilliant song...i loved his album Bullet. There was not a song on the album that i didnt enjoy...i love his voice and how he speaks up about issues that need to be adressed...in particular, Tomorrow...the comment he made in that song was awesome. As for this song...I have interpreted it more metaphorically than jasonjames88...not to disregard his idea on the meaning, by all means, his is also quite true. I see 'Girl America' as america, the country, itself...now, i'm not and american..im australian, so my point of view will be different....but the way i see it, calling it 'girl' shows a certain tenderness and love..fatherly love. I think Mat is saying how he loves the country, but is devistated about the corruption in it...thinking about it..America is a reasonably young country...it has been through a lot...they dont teach us american history here...only values...but it goes without saying..America had a well documented and extensive history...this is the 'age behind her eyes'. 'Natural born leader' we all rekon america is the super power of the world...so fair comment there...Kearney speaks of the corruption in more specific terms...such as pornography, drugs, the media and so forth. Basically the song is a shout out to all those americans who are struggling with their faith...he's saying that in this world of temptation there are brighter days ahead and that it is truly noble to hold onto ur standars and beliefs..
"It's not the circumstances that determine who you're gonna be
But how you deal with these problems and pains that come your way "
I love those lines...so true. The final verse is just beautiful....the thought provoking imagery is spectacular...
