I think that it is something he is trying to fight within himself ["black urge, I swore to dismiss".] It kind of seems like he is just using her for some other benefit ["sweet host, I'll feast within"] and he is preventing others who are close to her ["your minions keep on starving"] to get what it is they need. All of the references to "taste" "flesh" and "blood" give me a sense of vampires?
