If you ask me it's a message against war, but that's greatly influenced by MGS3 and its many anti-war messages. I picture a war veteran/mentor (boss?) telling/warning their son/protégé (student) (snake?) about the military and war.
Here’s my interpretation:
(By the way, "they" are the military/government)
Son, you've got a way to fall (a long Journey to death)
They'll tell you where to go (they’ll order you)
But they won't know (they don't really know what is happening around them - ignorance)
Son, you'd better take it all (gain all of the knowledge you can)
They'll tell you what they know
But they won't show (...how they really fell about it - no emotion or …that they don’t know everything)
Oh, I've got something in my throat (nervous, guilt?)
I need to be alone (to get over it)
While I suffer (hurt upon the recollection of the horrible past)
Son, you've got a way to kill (you will have to kill)
They're picking on you still (and it won’t stop)
But they don't know (…how hard it is)
Son, you'd better wait to shine (hide your discoveries)
They'll tell you what is yours (they’ll tell you what to keep)
But they take mine (they’ll take what they want… including your life)
Oh, I've got something in my throat
I need to be alone
While I suffer
(Flashback)
Oh, there's a hole inside my boat (I’m nearing the end)
I need stay afloat (fighting to stay alive)
For the summer long (at least until this is over)
