To me, the lyrics have always seemed to be about a battle between good and bad and the refference to the 'valley of the damned' leads me to believe that it's a fight between heaven and hell, which I get about a couple of their songs.. But I've always thought they were singing from the perspective of one of the warriors for the 'bad' side..
