Tonyk (though I doubt you'll ever read this message), I'd say that he actually does think they're lucky in a way. Even though those ordinary people have repetative, unfulfilled lives, they are content with themselves because they don't know any better. The narrator is one of those people who just can't see life in that simple way - to survive and enjoy.
