I don't know anything about the artist, but to me i think peteSzebin is basically right. I just wanted throw in the possiblity of the artist being openly adopted. that line, "Except a dream you saved my life" seems to suggest the person who left him behind did him a favor. I myself am adopted, it kind of captures how I feels sometimes. I feel grateful and yet, there I times I wonder if my birthparents are proud of me, or care. Also, Moses was adopted.
