I know the Cupid and Psyche story, and it does sound extremely similar. However, the first time I heard the song it reminded me of someone who had a girlfriend and circumstances tore them apart. The split made them fight, but he realized though that it was good, and that they learned how to love and how to be loved. He forgets about the memory as his life goes on. Then years down the road, he wakes up and realizes he and his son are going to be separated due to circumstance and the memory is reborn. He wants his son to go and be loved and know loved how he learned when he was young. This story couldn’t be about someone in the band, but maybe it was a song about someone they know, or inspired by a family member, or something. It doesn’t seem like the smashing pumpkins to write about Greek mythology, but who knows right?
