I always heard "mesh of tones" like mesh of /thorns/, as if they're lost in a bramble of emotions, scared to move in case it hurts.

I felt it was about a relationship that's broken down, gone bitter, and he's trying to get it back together "can you remember what we had?...you know the way I feel" because they do still love each other underneath - when " you start to push your lips to mine... it came to this" they fall back into it all over again, so as to stop being angry about the lies...
