I saw Hayden in concert a couple of years ago for my birthday. He said he had a couple of guys move a deep freezer from the basement of his house, and one of the movers had "Jingle Bells" as the ringtone of his cellphone (in the middle of summer), and this really annoyed Hayden, that the guy was using a Christmas song in summer. A few nights later Hayden was lying in bed, and he thought he heard the Jingle Bells ring coming from the main floor in his house. The next day he wrote this song.
It took me a while to figure out that the protagonist of the story died. I guess the optimist in me wanted to think that he was just unconscious for five days.
I have the music video for this all planned out in my head.
