i defintely think robbie was trying to show that he really wants acceptance but feels he has to be confident always and not let down his persona.
another thing i was thinking was that this was somewhat directed at American Idol/Pop Idol winners: the idea of voting for someone, can't argue with popularity, the old people and young taking a piece, and possibly the young and overrated part.
