Well don't know if I’ll be right but I love this band and I’ll take a shot at explaining some of this song.
"Where did you go?
Across the sea?
Sat on the beach
With the rusting machines?
Where did you go?
Across the sea?
Sat on the beach
With the rusting machines?"
Not to sure here, but I know I’ve seen pictures from the west coast were there are piers with amusement parks on them and the beach is right there. But at the same time I think this part is talking about the "photograph" from this verse.
"They had a photograph
A lousy picture of you
Just something to remind"
It seems that possible that the viewpoint of this song is from the future. I’ll discuss that more lately.
But now
"I know there was a time
Before we were born
We stood in the trees
Heads filled with nothing
There was a time
Before we were born
We stood in the trees
Heads filled with nothing"
I think it's pretty straightforward, it's talking about when us as humans were still living in the trees and we didn't have any of our modern thought of progress or consumerism and we lived as animals with “heads filled with nothing”. This would be directly linked with the wolf parade song "modern world" and the line "drove the savages back the trees".
“God made mistakes
We threw rocks at the sky
Old cities where they built things high
God made mistakes
We threw rocks at the sky
Old cities where they built things high”
And this would be were I found the idea that this song is set in the future. the line "old cities where they built things high" since it wasn't until more recent times that we've built huge buildings and revering to them as “old” seemingly makes it out to be someone talking about the city in the past tense.(yeah it’s a stretch) And the line "God made mistakes
We threw rocks at the sky" I think is referring to war, with the "rocks" being missiles or something of the like.
And now the verse
"Become an angel with its wings on fire
Here comes an angel with its wings on fire
I'm in a basement delivering the hours
I'm in a basement just killing the hours "
Now I believe this is someone who is sitting in the "basement just killing the hours". It would be someone in a bomb shelter that is looking at this photo of the past and looking out a window or has seen the outside where he is seeing "Here comes an angel with its wings on fire". Now the angel reference is a little odd, but if you look at it that possible the world has ended and this "angel" is the war that brought the "fire" and has now cleansed it of our modern ways.
Yeah now if that made any sense my hat's off to you. And it's just my opinion so take it for what it's worth, which is probably not much. I try.
