Sorry, I simply be dense, but your explanation of your interpretation eludes me -- probably because I'm not familiar with the cliche "wake up to the reins". It's one I've heard before undoubtedly, but was never clear on its meaning.

Care to elaborate?

Picture feeling a burden of misery and drearyness that way him down. Like when you're depressed it can feel really hard to get out of bed in the morning. That's why he sees a stop sign above his bed. Waking up to the rains. It's hard to wake up on rainy days, and this is also symbolic of that overwhelming feeling of dreariness. But when he gets up he has surpassed all of this, and it's like an accomplishment so he is 1 step ahead just from getting up. The majority of the song is painting this scene of "Fuck, the...
