after a family member's suicide, which left us all completely bereft and without any foreseeable closure (no note, no indication as to why she did it), i see this song in a whole new light, though not taking away from the validity and soundness of others' interpretations.

i see the protagonist of the song alternating between anger, despair and sadness at the loss of this person...sleep just to dream someone who is not alive anymore...in dreams you can see her, catch a glimpse of what she was like when within reach, when alive.

also, "wish i could be her creator, to twist her arms now" sounds a lot like the thought of a loved one left behind by someone who took her life by her own hand and the protagonist wishes that she had the power to prevent/control the person to alter the outcome of events...

"the stars fell from her hair then, i bent down to collect them, and then she was gone"...this is a haunting line for me. i think this is symbolic of the actual death of the person...and also references the heavens (i.e., the stars), a look towards the sky, and the actual looking forward to the time she will kill herself and become a part of the cosmos in a different form. others around her are completely oblivious to what she is thinking as evidenced by the line "i came to find out, find out she made up her mind, oh" -- a complete surprise when she is discovered and realization hits that she killed herself and all the angst and misery that must've preceded that.

by the time the dust settles, the suicide is completed, the person who happens upon her just sees a lifeless form, no longer a person who exists, as symbolized by the "stars fell from her hair then."

any feedback on this interpretation would be great. i don't know if my life experience is making me over-analyze, but it really hit me how this song's lyrics seem to fit this interpretation, at least for me.

one last thing: dave's painfully wistful tone as he sings indicates a loss of a sort that cuts him to the core. unrequited love and death of a love one, especially by a suicide, make sense in light of that tone...

sawyourface - I see this song in the same manner. I know the feelings and complete devastation of losing someone to suicide. For me, the line "wish I could be her creator to be the light in her eyes" carries the interpretation home. The light of life is gone.
