I think Sinead is talking about England in this, England is the mother. I think she's also speaking of the Irish Famine that caused thousands of people to starve to death. Maybe the "change" is that many Irish people are learning their language and their history... and they're doing something to make their country their own. Who knows though, that's just my opinion.
