This being said, I can try to expose my impression about this - surprise, surprise! - enigmatic one. I think Ian is showing to us that when the night falls our real identities are revealed to ourselves and we feel free to be who we really are ("...impure disguise / our vulgar sons...") and to think about what should really matter in our own lives ("...and you and me / us realized, our bigger themes..."), since the dark of the night would force us to make a big movement of introspection. Besides, the night owns that perfect characteristic for leaving us to be as intense as you can be ("...whatever burns, burns eternally / so take me in turns internally / when I'm on fire, my body will be / forever yours / nocturnal me...").
