Its a revelation, of sorts, in which he realises that we've destroyed the world. and now he will refuse to close his eyes anymore, in that he will stop pretending not to see all the horror and destruction all around us.

its sort of a 'loss of innocence' idea, i always thought. Where the young are the innocent and aren't responsible for the world's problems, but then they grow up to become part of the problem.
