To me, this sounds like a song about depression, and looking to something greater than yourself for guidance and above all, comfort.
The line "If I were to put the big light out, surely there would be an end?" probably alludes to suicide. I don't mean to get all morbid of 'goth' here, but it's about facing an especially rough spot in your life, and momentarily wondering if taking that way out would erase all the suffering. Hopefully you all love Life more than that, but we've all had those moments! ;-)
For those of you that are religious this will automatically allude to God, but I think it could also include an individual you look upto as a mentor, or simply a mysterious, benevolent force in this universe that smiles upon you and guides you through rough patches. =)
