To me, it seems he's talking to a parent.
I can really relate this to my own situation with my mother, how she never amounted to much of anything. Regardless, the little things I remember make me feel at home, and when I can't go anywhere else, I can turn to her.
Also, "the foundation is crumbling" makes me think more of growing old than a failing relationship, however, it's to be taken as each individual takes it.
