I think this song has refrences to alcohol and drug abuse, but I don't think that's the whole purpose of the song. I think its about events that lead up to that moment.
For example, the beginning of the song talks about his daily routine. Wake up, eat, shower, check his email/messages, etc, and then he probably heads to work (hence, "sometimes after 9"). It's all routine, each and every day. I believe this is what leads up to him being drunk and high all of the time. He is losing himself in his routine, and finds escape through the alcohol and drugs, but then finds out this is also detaching himself farther from himself.
