I think this is about an abusive relationship from the point of a friend of that couple. All of their friends knew something was wrong but it was always ignored or excuses were made. They bought all the lies they were told by this couple (obviously the guy won't admit to doing anything and the woman is usually too scared or ashamed to admit anything either). Finally this friend can't hide his feelings anymore and confronts them, or goes to the police...basically makes what he knows is happening public. This results in the couple breaking up, maybe the guy going to jail. Many times when this happens in an abusive relationship, the woman feels it is her fault, or is so brainwashed that there is nothing wrong that she is distraught over the relationship ending. The singer's friends think he shouldn't have done anything, saying that he should've left everything alone, everything was fine. This drives him crazy and he can't understand how no one can see the crime being committed.

I like the political angle as well though.
