Well, if I'm right, I think this song shows a lot of maturity in Dando's song writing. The whole new album does, actually. This is one of te better ones. First off, lemme get this out of the way- J's guitar playing is awesome. He's one of my favorite guitar players. He's good at writing short, intense, emtional solos that don't drag on too long. This is a good example. Anyway. It seems that Dando is sort of saying he's getting tired of both casual sex, and settling on being with girls he doesn't really care for. The bedroom ritual would be, I assume, sex. Yet the way he says it sounds almost like he does it more out of habit now. He realizes that its a simple to feel like you're being loved without actually running the risk of being hurt. The second verse is about how he always says he's going to change, going to try to wait for an actual relationship, but always ends up going back to his old ways. The short verse- sticking to the safety of the script means that he knows he's just going to do what he always does, but at the same time he knows that it's not really what he wants, or what's best for him.

And thus, no backbone. It implies that what he does now is either cowardly- since he's afraid of getting hurt in an actual relationship- or that the casual sex is meaningless in some way.

Maybe I overanalyzed that, but i like this interpretation.
