I think blindside1521 is right.
I think this song is about so many things in his life going wrong, that he feels like he has nothing to live for, so why be on the earth if his life is so bad? Then when he says, so "watch me drive home... with my eyes closed", makes it seem like he's playing with the idea of suicide. He's not going to kill himself, but he hopes it will happen.
When he talks about being shown heaven and being dropped to hell, I think that might relate to the thought of many Christians thinking suicide is an unforgivable sin and how he once thought life was going great, which is the heaven part, and then his life started going down the drain, which is the hell part. This could be about his frustrations with God, and why he would let all these bad things happen to him. And that's why he says "and maybe it's better if you never open your eyes". Why does he let all these things happen?
