i think the song shows how different people get different things from the same context.
so the fox/girl/boy are out in the snow and not really enjoying it, the snow has become little more than a barrier to their pursuits.
but the kid has no cynicism because he is young and naive and so just plays in the snow, that one gratifying moment whereby he knows happiness and youth will never be repeated "once a lifetime" until he grows up and then when the wonder has worn off he will become the fox or the girl or the boy.
