I've always liked this song--another Tanya Donnelly number--and now has true meaning in my current role as Auntie of 7 nieces and 2 nephews. One nephew in particular, Caleb, was 3 at the time his pre-school teacher started reading his class Harry Potter books. Of course, she started with "HP and the Sorceror's Stone" containing that critical chapter, "The Birth of Norbert" where Hagrid had hatched a dragon's egg he had found. Thus baby dragon, Norbert was born, promptly blew fire, almost burned off Hagrid's beard, and Caleb has been hooked on any movie or tale featuring dragons that blow fire while holding his dear Auntie hostage in his lair. Yep, I have been tortured playing Victim to Caleb's Fire-Breathing Dragons when I have to entertain him so his folks can have an evening out or keeping him out of his Mommy's and Grandma's hair during holiday functions. Man, I am a pretty cool Auntie, huh?? LOL
Right now, this song will have to do until I finally come up with lyrics to a song I've been working on for 5 years (!!): "My Harry Potter Dragon Just Blew Fire". It's based on Caleb's 3rd. Christmas when he got what at first I didn't think even existed but guess what! A toy called Roaring, Snoring Norbert really did and Santa (a/k/a my sister) found this on sale at Kmart. Caleb was so thrilled he simultaineously wore out its batteries and killed the thing permanently that very same Christmas day by overriding the burping, snorning, and sneezing sounds to get to the exciting part: when that thing's light bulb in its mouth started flashing quickly, Caleb was sure impressed enough to shout over and over every time that bulb flashed, oh, about a million times all day: "Auntie Kim! Auntie Kim! My Harry Potter dragon just blew fire!"
Can you see why this Auntie Brag tale needs to be immortalized into song? Dragonhead by Throwing Muses will have to do for now, but let's face it, although Tanya Donnelly had other reasons why she wrote this song, some of these lyrics do fit my feelings toward nephew Caleb's dragon obsession: I even dream about Caleb's fire-breathing legion of dragons, thus wrecking my sleep thanks to that Harry Potter Dragon. Also, how do his folks get him to sleep with all those other dragon toys they've given him which, if he feels he doesn't need sleep, will play with all night if need be? And never the nice dragons sometimes I read in Chinese fairy tales as a kid that protect entire villages from evil or serve Chinese royalty with devotion. No! Evil dragons spitting fire thus burning Aunties and other living creatures to a crisp! Please help! Kindly throw any lyric ideas per my email addy through SongMeanings or post to my blog at MySpace.com. Auntie Kim thanks you!
