i dont know if this sounds too sadistic but i feel that the song is about the narrorator coming home and finding another man with his wife so in turn, he kills them. "Finding our home a house of pain, see in an instant things can change and never feel the same" when he sees his wife with another man he cant take it anymore and everything changes. "Trenches dug out the side of the road Remember the smell of earth in piles" that can be the narrorator looking back on the graves he built for them on some lonely road. "There was nothing left to do" once he was done with the dead he just walked on because his love was dead. and finally, in the last stanza where the narrorator repeats the chorus, it sounds like he is saying it in a sarcastic tone. o well thats just my idea.
