My favourite song so far off of Sam's Town. It's a tribute to Americana in my opinion.

The narrator is noticing that people in his town are boring, no one ever lets it loose...he is among those boring uninspired people, and it's starting to bother him.

(Nobody ever had a dream round here, but I don't really mind and it's starting to get to me Nobody ever pulled the seams round here, but I don't really mind and it's starting to get to me)

He has this feeling that something great is going to inspire him and break out of the ho-hum town. But, he is attached to the place he's lived his whole life.

(I've got this energy beneath my feet like something underground's gonna come up and carry me, I've got this sentimental heart that beats and I don't really mind and it's starting to get to me)

Always being in the little old town is a waste of time. People criticize him for wanting to break out, for wanting to see the world. He's sick of everyone holding him back. He knows he can make it in his life as long as he comes back home, because his 'sentimental heart' is tied to his home.

Now.."Why do you waste my time?" Is/If the answer to the question on your mind And I'm sick of all my judges so scared to walk on by [so scared of what they'll find] But I know that I can make it As long as somebody takes me home, every now and then...)

He imagines the lights of the amazing big cities he yearns to see.

(Now/Oh, have you ever seen the lights? Have you ever seen the lights?)

He gets out of the town, but people tell him it's the wrong way to go and he should just stay home. He realizes it's all a facade (masquerade) and the people are patriotic like crazy and want him to stay in the perfect, ideal American town and not see the world and all it has to offer.

I took the shuttle on a shopway driveway [shockwave ride] the people the way said don't go that way [?] I took a boat [bullet] and a hook to that side [I look inside...] And it's running through my veins I know there's a faster way [It's an American masquerade]

He's never known anyone that's tried to break out of the little town, he's lost. All he's known is the afore mentioned perfect, ideal American town with the perfect American ideals.

(Does she know that way..? I've never really known anyone Do you know another way? Red white and blue upon a birthday cake, And my brother, he was born on the fourth of the July...and that's all)

He envisions the big lights of Sam's Town and London and he knows that making it to these exciting places will spiritually free him. It will free him of all the questions he had about other places.

(You know I see London, I see Sam's Town holds/pulls my hand and let's my hair down Rolls the world right off my shoulder I see London, I see Sam's Town)

Sorry that was so long...if you read it all, I love you! This is just my personal interpretation and who knows what the Killers really meant. Beautiful song!

You seem to think that Sam's Town is a big city like London or New York, but Sam's Town is actually a dumpy casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. It's away from the strip where all the tourists are, so most of the people who go to Sam's Town are people who live in Las Vegas. The Killers are from Las Vegas, by the way. I've always interpreted the lines, "I see London, I see Sam's Town / Holds my hand and lets my hair down" as another example of Brandon's sentimentality and nostalgia for his hometown because Sam's Town is probably...
