I think this song is about a Christian who still relies on worldly popularity and acceptance for peace and comfort, but soon figures out that that won't fulfill him. Like the song says "I'll selfdestruct and die, from the strain of pleasing the masses". It's not enough, and it's not possible to hold up without something higher to fill the void of our souls, which would be Jesus Christ.
