To me this sounds a lot like the chorus is saying "shouldn't we talk about the weather / shouldn't we talk about the government?" Although I realize that it's about the shallowness of modern relationships, I used to like to think that the chorus was about a relationship so great that it shocks the singer. Like, he believes they should be talking about something mundane or trying to make pointless conversation because that's what he's used to, but instead they know each other so well that they have much more meaningful conversation. Just a thought. =D
