Sting's Golden Globe Award for his song "Until" can be chalked up to the inspiration of love as a political statement. The honor, bestowed Sunday (January 20) at ceremonies in Beverly Hills, came for his contribution to the film, Kate & Leopold, a movie that struck a chord with the singer-songwriter amid the current international climate.
Speaking backstage, Sting explained, "It kind of took me out of that depression, you know? It was a beautiful, romantic film and I thought, that's a pretty political statement, you know, 'I love you,' it's more political than anything. So I decided to write a song for it and it was kind of an antidote to what was going on in the world."
Sting bested a field that included Paul McCartney, Enya, Dianne Warren, and David Baerwald. He joked that he had to win, pointing to the absence of his wife Trudie Styler at the event as explanation. "My beautiful wife, it's my daughter's birthday in England, so she's in the right place. I had to win this tonight, otherwise [it's] a waste of time, me coming here," he said with a laugh.
Sting will give the award to his daughter. "She was the first person I played the song to, [so] she'll like it," he says.
