I think everyone who has had a crappy Christmas can relate to this. And let's face it, everything tends to go wrong that time of year. Getting dumped, family arguments, getting bad news... In my case a friend getting really ill last year, finding out my grandma had cancer the year before, and my dad leaving when I was ten. Yeah... December sucks.
I think the song's about family who don't get along trying to act 'normal' just because it's Christmas and they think they should, and the songwriter knows it's all a waste of time since they'll go back to what they were like the second the holiday's over. I think he's trying to say that yeah, it's a holy day, but people shouldn't really act any different to each other (like...nicer) purely BECAUSE it's Christmas.
