Any song about love, whether it's presented in a postive or negative light, can be about a relationship between two people or between a person and God...read the Bible and you'll know that. That being said though, not every song about love from a Christian is necessarily about God. This one, however, presents a lot of evidence that says to me that this song is about someone's relationship with God.
"My halo is broken now and I'm all that's left"
Who traditionally has halos? Angels. How do we know about angels? Through the Bible.
"I was bound to the things I did"
The Bible speaks a lot about being "bound" to secular things. Staying bound to the secular instead of leaving it behind for the spiritual is one way to stop being an angel and "break the halo."
"Could you fill this hole? / Cause I can't do it alone"
The preceding lyrics definitely convey a sense of being empty. An angel losing his halo -- as evidenced by breaking it -- would definitely feel empty after giving up the spiritual things that once filled him. Who better to fill a spiritual void in an angel than God?
"My heart's on the thrashing floor / And I've done every single thing I could"
Actually, the lyrics are wrong here...it's "threshing," not thrashing. A threshing floor is a tool utilized by farmers to separate wheat grain from the stuff around it (chaff), so that the wheat could be utilized and the other stuff could be thrown out. Biblically speaking, Jesus used the threshing floor as a symbol of judgement for mankind, separating those who are saved from those who are not saved (see Matthew 3:12). The lyrics here mean that the singer has done everything he could, but he knows that he will be judged for everything he's done.
This song, "The Coldest Heart," talks about someone who, in the sight of God, has fallen a long way from the things of God and recognizes just how cold and lonely life is apart from God. The singer recognizes now that he needs God back in his life if things are ever to be what they used to be.
Whether you believe that this is a song about one's relationship with God doesn't change the fact that this is a phenomenal song. I'm looking forward to hearing more from Classic Crime.
