I could be totally wrong, but I sorta get this feeling that the song is about someone writing a song about something that at some time or another is rather meaningful to the writer. The speaker of the song is a friend sorta egging them on to do this, to write the song, even if the person writing doesn't want to. They are pushing them to write it down, even saying they will finish it for them. My guess is they are hoping for a hit and it does become one, even though they sell out because of it. They "throw away" their integrity, but hey, they have the money. Love the song.
