i think the meaning is kind of obvious. i imagine goldfield as one of those tiny, old, depressing towns in which everyone is poor and struggling because there are no jobs to be had. it's an "old mining town" past its hayday. the only way to find a better life is to get out of the town.
and i guess the irony that's "laying thick on the ground" is that the town of Goldfield has no gold, metaphorical or literal.
