The most thorough explanation of this song can be found in George Orwell's "1984", particulary the part where Winston Smith is given a copy of the manual of the Brotherhood. Inside there is a very details and intelligent look inside the causes of war and the consequential benefits to a very small portion who are able to profit and exert control over the general population through extended periods of war. Basically it is explained that if all surplus human labour is directed to a destructive path such as war then the masses will be kept in lower living conditions through longer work days and the constant fear of death if not protecting the country by contributing to working to produce weaponry. This eventually results in a veil of ignorance blinding the population from the motives of their government and the population is generally dumbed down.
However, this song is essentially a plea for the previously mentioned to not occur, and instead wishes for peace, mentioning the only real 'profit' for all humans can be through peace where a large bulk of a society's labour force is not focuses on creating vastly expensive and labour intensive weaponry to destroy other human beings. So a new fight is called on in which a fight against the corruption of the governments who to war and bring the power back to the people so we can all live more beatiful lives, collectivly as good people are not wasting their time, money and well-being on wars that do nothing but destroy.
A wonderful thought and a wonderful song.
