From what I can tell, someone is lying to them, causing them pain, making them weaker and weaker, and even though the narrator realizes he's being lied to, he still grows weaker by the "parasite". He still believes the parasite even though no one believes him and the parasite just hurts him more and more.
This is just my opinion but from what I can tell, this sounds about right.
