The original was by Huddy Leadbetter (aka Leadbelly), the old blues singer. Another rendition of one of his songs you might be familiar with was Nirvana's Unplugged rendition of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night". I haven't actually heard the original version though, I just recognized the name in the liner notes.
