Cover art for The Fire lyrics by Reel Big Fish

Its about a breakup. He thought he was teaching her a lesson by ending their relationship/friendship, like out of spite. I think it backfired on him. I think he thought she'd be the one to be miserable without him but he sees she's ok and moved on without him.

I think he was always confused about their relationship. He's realizing that he really needs her and what they had was real and now that he let their separation go on "too long" its hard to get back to where they were or what they had. I think she's ok and moved on but he's telling her he's "not alright" without her.
He's telling her that "We've got the fire, but does it mean anything We've got the fire tonight. We wanna fight but will that change anything? Will it make it alright?"

the fire really means "passion" and he realizes that their fighting has been stupid and his feelings regardless go on for her.

I think in the end he's telling her there are problems everywhere and she should realize nothing is perfect. But she's not "buying it" really means not falling for it again...she's had enough.

"their still gonna make you pay" I think he realizes the problems he's caused in the relationship made them breakup but she doesn't want any part of him which living without her is a big price to pay.
