Ah, maybe this is too obvious, but is it any more complex than describing the Northern Lights and their beauty? They are fairly common in Iceland and flare up on occasion during the night - 'Looking for moments of shine'. 'Threading' would suggest the curtain shapes that they form. 'Sparkle the sun off' probably refers to their solar source. Sometimes when you feel like crap, seeing something beautiful helps the suffering. So, this seens to be an account of travelling out to a glacier during the night specifically to view the Aurora borealis and feel something beautiful in an effort to sooth.
