From the opening lines it's always made me think they meet each other at some kind of protest, but maybe they were both simply hitchhiking(hence the "restless" line). Probably only knew each other for the one day, or maybe a weekend...then split ways abruptly, which the narrator regrets.
The bit about missing the person and wanting to see their silly grin is so perfectly descriptive. I'm filled with a sad kind of warmth whenever I listen to this.
