i love this song, i find it just beautiful, to me it means that he doesn't want help from anyone, he won't face the fact that there was any greater power or anything like that helping him through the hard times in his life, it's like he doesn't want to believe that it was so hard and that he had help along the way, like he needs to believe that he was on his own because he felt so alone, he felt like he had done everything on his own and he was proud of his strength and felt like he had made it, and it was as though religion and a greater power were trying to take that away from him with things like "when there was only one set of footprints in the sand, i was carrying you"... i love it, i think of it as, "i've made it and no one can take that away from me, i did it all by myself and no one helped me" and not wanting to admit that there was more to it than that... it's really spoken to me a lot recently...
