This song reminds me of the first line of Breakdown-- "It's alright if you love me, it's alright if you don't." Just kind of live in the moment and "make the best" of it. Enjoy it while it's there, but when it's gone... meh, "no big deal."
I thought the lines "I really need you/ to help me kill a little bit of time" were pretty funny. Usually when a song says "I need you," it's more of a "I can't live without you, you're so great, you give my life meaning" thing. But Tom Petty sets it up so that things are just a little less boring with her around than without her.
On a side note, this is one of Tom Petty's oldest songs. It goes back to his Mudcrutch and pre-Heartbreakers days.
