I think maybe.. she's talking about a place she used to know, obviously, but hasn't been there in a long time and now that she's had the opportunity to visit nothing is the same, or seems that way.
But despite this, she thinks that the real place she used to know still exists, no matter what other people tell her. Or perhaps she's talking about a person, not a place? That's what it sure seems like..
To me it's always been about a person. Maybe she refers to them as 'cellar door' because it was a kind of hidden underground thing, maybe somebody she couldn't always see but had good times with nonetheless. They were both very close but time has made them drift apart. And now everyone thinks they don't know eachother anymore.. but she knows them maybe even more than herself.
This song confuses me.. Sounds beautiful, though.
