This is probably the only Spandau Ballet song that I like... I can't completely figure it out, but it's definitely about two lovers, separated in the beginning by social class, race, religion, something like that... but with the support of their parents, if not of society, they end up together. Maybe about a Catholic and Protestant couple in Northern Ireland, talking about "this troubled land" -- although when I first heard it, I thought of Tolkien's tale of Beren and Luthien :)

DREAMGIRL, YA NEARLY RIGHT LOVE, ITS ABOUT A PROTESTANT BOY IN LOVE WITH A CATHOLIC GIRL, ONLY THE PARENTS WONT HAVE IT..(THEM BEING TOGETHER I MEAN), SO THEY MAKE LOVE ON THE WASTELANDS, SNEAKING THROUGH THE BARACADES TO BE TOGETHER,(BECAUSE MAINLY OF THE LOVE THEY HAVE FOR THERE PARENTS......ITS A BEAUTIFUL SONG AND LIKE U , THE ONLY ONE I REALLY LIKE BY THEM, CAN I JUST ADD THOUGH, IVE JUST JOINED THIS SITE, N NEVER THOUGHT IN A MILLION YEAR ID BE ON MI PC TALKING TO PEOPLE ABOUT THE MEANING OF SONGS, BUT THERES SO MANY I WANT...

The 'terrible beauty' reffered to here is the name that the Irish poet W B Yeates gave to the IRA's emergence when the 'Troubles' took hold. Beautiful song, Beautiful Poet

And now I know what they're are saying It's a terrible beauty we've made So we make our love on wasteland And through the barricades
