Sounds to me like he found a really good girlfriend, one he had hopes of marrying someday. The "With one quick glance it was striped from me" part is maybe she caught him looking at another girl and she left him. So he screwed it all up and is now spending "years thinking about how much you just ruined the best thing you ever had in your life". I love the ending.
