"This was the first song written with Ben Gibbard on drums. We were really into Bjork and I’d been wanting to put a break-beat in a song. I didn’t finish the lyrics until the last minute. I remember sitting by the water in Seattle while Gibbard tracked his drums for the demos. It was a beautiful day and I just didn’t feel right bitching. And I definitely didn’t want the first song on the record to be a downer. Even though life was a pretty big downer at the time, I really made an attempt to get a positive notion in there. Whether I was successful or not is ultimately up to the listener.
Recording Bridges Worth Burning was a monster. The record was rehearsed in three days, recorded in five, and mixed in two. It was a really fun experience. It felt like jazz."
