i love this song. i'm going to break it apart & put what i think it means.

Tell me a story How you beat the giants How you make this little world spin You're such a riot You're a genius of the worst kind You're a martyr in your own mind

he's complaining about her own opinions of herself... he's calling her arrogant, maybe trying to convince himself of this bad quality so he can feel better about the situation, maybe not. he talks to her in a tone that's ironically condescending for this particular accusation- "you're a genius of the worst kind, you're a martyr in your own mind" thus implying she's not all that great at all, still trying to convince himself he doesn't care. which leads to the chorus...

Why do you have to be the one That loves to hurt me so Why must i be the one That just cant let go

ohhh he's admitting it to himself, and to her! she "loves to hurt him" but he "can't let go" & he doesn't understand why. who hasn't been in this situation before? it bites.

Tell me a story Of your long lost desire Of the weight of the world And the beautiful liar I've seen good intentions face down on the floor You scratch my back I'll stab yours

here it's a little hard to tell if he's seriously looking up to her or mocking her. the beginning sounds like it could be that he really wants to hear of her adventures, but i don't think so. i think he's almost chastising her for having things in her life that she likes better than him. he's trying to make them seem smaller so he can convince himself he doesn't need her. the line "you scratch my back, i'll stab yours" shows that he's got anger with this issue- he wants to hurt her because she's hurting him.

the chorus again is him admitting, as painful as it is, that he really does want to be with her, and "can't let go" of her.

I am a rock With no hard feelings The cynical backlash Has got me reeling

the line "i am a rock with no hard feelings" seems like he's trying to convince either her or himself that he doesn't care- he has no hard feelings toward her because she doesn't matter to him. the next line is maybe about the fact that he's trying & getting shut down- the cynical backlash (rejection?) has got him reeling.

We've lost your results We've lost all ideals So hows the wife doing And how do you feel

the first two lines, their relationship is basically horrible now, they've lost everything good they had, but he still can't walk away from her, or let her walk away. the line about the wife... seriously confuses me. i don't get it.

the chorus closes it, & he's back where he has to admit to himself he's not over her & isn't ready yet to be without her.

just my opinion.

anyone have any ideas about the wife line?
