I think you guys got it right. A lot of people did think that their lyrics were deep messages about the meaning of life etc. So they backtracked-- just like Dylan and the Beatles did. They said--whoa, hold on, we arent prophets. The Kinks did the same thing with Rock and Roll Fantasy, and the Stones with Its only RnR.
