I come from a family which dissolved in my 13th year, and this song hits home on that issue - to me, the narrator of this song is thinking these thoughts to herself as she and her spouse lie in bed, him sleeping, she not. They've recently had a child, at least within the past three years or so, and lately their marriage is becoming strained. Perhaps they were too quick to marry, but whatever the reason, she feels they are quickly losing the love they have, and their relationship and marriage are becoming "empty" and completely based around raising the kid, not their feelings for each other.
That's what I see, but of course it may just be me applying my own old situation to this song.
