I am aware of what the White Stripes' version sounds like, and I know it is also fairly slow and peaceful. But I was saying that Johnson's version is even more so, and it works better that way.
The White Stripes original video (which is the album version also) is 2:25. The Jack Johnson cover is 2:19. They both have exactly the same lyrics, and little dead time. I just watched the White Stripes video and the music ends at 2:20 (last few seconds are Jack poking Meg, and fadeout). That's the long version - the short version is that the Jack Johnson song is not, in fact, slower.
